Operational Risk Management – Bypasses and Protection Layer Defeats

Read the highlights you missed here:

Webinar Summary Blog: Operational Risk Management – Bypasses and Protection Layer Defeats

All industrial processes have multiple layers of protection to reduce the risk of consequences. In certain operational scenarios, these protective layers may need to be defeated or bypassed. Temporarily removing a protective layer from service is an activity that needs to be managed to ensure that proper controls are in place to ensure process safety is not compromised.

Many industries and facilities struggle with being able to manage protective layer defeats effectively. Temporary bypasses turn into inadvertent permanent bypasses, visibility of multiple defeats protecting against the same consequence, bypasses performed without documentation, “quick fixes” that result in much greater risk, etc. Traditional systems of managing bypasses are siloed, heavily manual, and nearly invisible to those who need to know about them.

Key Learnings include:

  • The relationship between bypasses and layers of protection
  • How are bypasses managed now and the difficulties with current approaches
  • Current technologies to improve and manage risks
  • A glimpse into the future of managing protection layers as technologies mature
