Pipe Spool Size Visualization Using Intergraph Spoolgen® 10
Spoolgen enables fabricators to design and plan their pipe spool production. The new version of this software, Spoolgen 10, now allows users to visualize the volume of each spool relative to a fixed volume, which significantly speeds up the planning process.
Spoolgen forms the heart of Hexagon’s digital chain for piping fabrication, supporting seamless transfer of piping data from Engineering to Fabrication. Spoolgen lets fabricators produce spool drawings containing all the field welds, using Isogen® automatically (Isogen, the industry-standard software for automated piping isometric generation, is included in Spoolgen.) No data re-entry is required, as Isogen readily reuses the original data.
We are always looking to streamline and improve our software, so we are pleased to announce that Spoolgen 10, the newest version, is now available. Container size check is the major new feature, although there are other minor features and fixes in both Spoolgen and Intergraph Smart® Isometrics, its companion product.
Container Size
A container is a box into which each spool must fit. This may be a shipping container, or a treatment tank, or some other dimension of a pipe spool shop that limits the size of the spools that can be made. You define the 3 container sides in the projects and Spoolgen does the rest!
Straight after importing the design data in PCF (Piping Component File) or IDF (Intermediate Data Format), you can see the spools that you need to split up. Spoolgen automatically identifies which spools are too large by coloring them in red in the Pipeline Explorer. No more calculating each spool’s size by adding the dimensions. You can see at a glance where your judgement is needed to divide the spools sensibly.
Visualization
Spoolgen offers a 3D view that allows users to see all the piping at true scale, in 3 dimensions. Spoolgen 10 adds the ability to see bounding boxes in this view. Once a spool is selected, you can turn on wireframes, indicating both the overall spool size and the container size simultaneously. You can immediately see where the spool is too large. This helps you place the field welds at the best location to create the spools that you want to handle in your facility.
Summary
Spoolgen 10 is an incrementally better product than Spoolgen 9.2. We urge you to upgrade to take advantage of its productivity improvements, including the automatic detection of oversized spools, as demonstrated above.
