Modernizing Vessel Design: Sustainable Operations and Efficient Asset Maintenance with PV Elite®

Around the globe, organizations are striving to operate more sustainably. However, maintaining their current operations is equally crucial for our future. Although current ways of working may cause carbon emissions, the damage from a containment breach or similar environmental catastrophes could become dire and can occur in a very short amount of time.

Continual monitoring and consistent maintenance of older vessels are fundamental to maximizing output and avoiding potential failures. These failures can cost significantly more than consistent asset maintenance. Optimizing designs for long-term maintenance will also help to reduce further costs as assets age.

Designing and maintaining vessels involves solving complex problems and meeting stringent criteria, including material selection, safety factors, nozzle placement and supports. A safe, reliable analysis with an industry-leading tool is paramount, given the modern world's reliance on visualization and computer-aided design. While legacy designs based on spreadsheets or hand calculations persevere, modern computing and software design offer significant advantages in terms of design speed and maintenance. Relying on designs based on spreadsheets or hand calculations alone could jeopardize safety, compromise efficiency and potentially result in missed deadlines.

PV Elite® offers users the ability to create visual models of their pressure vessels and heat exchangers. Whether initiating a new design from a data sheet, a few basic parameters, or a drawing, PV Elite’s 2D and 3D model visualization can assist engineers in refining a design. It also allows them to analyze and modify older designs.

The real-time feedback PV Elite provides enables engineers to quickly visualize their current design. For instance, if a design's input values - such as required thickness - are incorrect or inadequate, PV Elite alerts the user promptly. This real-time feedback feature permits immediate design modifications and verifies whether the adjustments are in accordance with the codes without the need for a complete analysis.

PV Elite's new 2D view (a geometric visualization, similar to a 2.5D design), is designed to feel like a drawing board and offers engineers a two- or three-dimensional view space to create design models. It can build a bill of materials in real-time as components are added to the model. The 3D standard view offers an all-encompassing visualization of the vessel.

Visualization in PV Elite extends beyond input, offering easily discernible color-coded output reports to highlight design failures due to wind, seismic activity, nozzle issues, and more. This is vital for preventing spills or unpredicted incidents that can result in substantial penalties.

Modernizing vessel design to solve crucial problems and secure safe equipment operation is the ultimate goal of design software like PV Elite. Its tools optimize and enhance the ability to tackle these issues, save time and resources and facilitate on-time project completion. Future computer-aided engineering will continue to be significantly driven by visual feedback, helping users easily process information. This will not only improve designs but also ensure strict adherence to critical requirements.
