Improving Performance with the Latest Spoolgen Release

Intergraph Spoolgen is at the core of Hexagon’s digital chain for piping fabrication, supporting the digital transfer of piping data between engineering and fabrication. Spoolgen enables fabricators to produce spool drawings containing all the actual welds performed, using the world’s premier isometric drawing engine, Isogen.

We are always looking to streamline and improve the software, so we are pleased to announce that there is a new version, Spoolgen 9.2 available.

Looking at the main constituents of this consolidation release:
• Spoolgen 9.2, the main application, features usability and performance improvements, backed up by a new version of the Spoolgen Web API.
• Intergraph Smart Isometrics, Spoolgen’s companion product, also introduces a new version with similar usability and performance improvements, Smart Isometrics 7.2.

Spoolgen Improvements
Spoolgen offers several improvements suggested by our customers. Among them:
• Bend radius can now be changed in Spoolgen to get accurate lengths when the fabricator optimizes the design for the machines available in their workshop.
• Weld gaps are now handled in more intuitive way.
• Selection of components in the tree view is clearer.

Smart Isometrics Improvements
• Tree view selection is also better in Smart Isometrics.
• Some of the menus have been re-ordered to put the best choices at the top.
• Bend radius for pulled bend is now drawn in the 2D view for quick reference, and absolute values, rather than multiples, can be used for the bend radius.
• Smart Isometrics Material Editor can now be used to build Isometrics specs from collections of IDFs or PCFs, enabling a fabricator to build a spec quickly, which is useful if they have to redraw some of the isometrics using Smart Isometrics before importing them to Spoolgen.

Performance Improvements
Three areas were identified where performance could be significantly improved:
• Batch drawing performance was poor, as only a few tens of drawings could be created in a batch. This has been extended to many hundreds of drawings per session
• The applications took a long time to start if there are network projects, so this has been optimised.
• All interactions with the Spoolgen web API have been streamlined, resulting it better responsiveness in Isogen Database projects.

Spoolgen 9.2 is an incrementally better product than Spoolgen 2019 R1. We urge you to upgrade to gain the advantage of those improvements. The underlying Isogen and POD technology is continually evolving independently and shared across the versions, so this is a low-risk upgrade to the end-user applications. Contact Hexagon PPM now for further information.
